Sandra's Story

A bit of an update added to some things here that you already may know. Many of you have gone all through school with me since I moved to LA at the age of 10 and finished the last 1/2 of the 6th grade at Brentwood Elementary. Some of you also know that I was chosen out of a dance class for my first Tevision Job at the age of 10. I never had to think about a career as I literally fell in to one at a very early age, By the time I was 14, I had all 3 of my Actor's Union Cards and was working pretty steadily. While at Uni, I was screen tested for several series and several times for Maria in "Westside Story". I was unknown and only 16 years old and would have pushed the buget far too high as I stiil would have had to go to school on the set, could only work 4 hours and allowed no overtime as well as even though my mother would have been on the set, under 18, they must also hire a Social Worker. Producer/Director Robert Wise, took my screen tests from the vault and personally gave them to me, as in those days that kind of film went a long way in being cast in many other roles. Some of you remember that while at SMCC, I guest starred on "Cheyenne" and "Bronco", My first live TV show was with Charleton Heston. My first filmed TV show was with John Forsythe, so I was lucky to start out with bang up credits. In my early teens, I continually modled for Catalina Swimsuits, both runway and their yearly catalogues. I did almost every soft drink commercial, was a regular or guest star on several TV series and always did a ton of Print (Photography Ads and Billboards). While at SMCC, I entered a Local Beauty Contest on a bet. My friends dared me into it, betting that I would win. My bet was that I would lose. Much to my surprise, I won. The girl who came in 2nd went on to take Miss USA. I ended up by being taken to MGM for a 3 year Talent Contract. I thank my friends at SMCC, mostly Steven Morse, who pushed me in to this contest as by just having entered it, I was taken to MGM by MGM's Head Talent Scout who was one of the judges. These friends and Steve were the ones that really gave my career a big boost. While at MGM, I guest starred on several shows and landed a contarct as a Series Regular on "Dr. Killdare", with Richard Chamberlain and Raymond Massey. For some reason, I became a favorite of MGM's Public Relations Dept. and ended up doing magazine covers, had notices in Variety and Reporter, the Industry's Trade Papers, and was featured in magazine and newspaper articles which should have been done by their already known young stars. I was chosen as "MGM's Star Of The Future" and presented at what was then "The Deb Star Ball". Every studio nominated their choice but only 12 of us were chosen. One of the highlights was that we all appeared on the "Bob Hope Show", and we were introduced individually by Bob. Having received the "Debbie", while it is no longer given, it was then a very pretigious award and guranteed each of us a lot more work. I was leaving the "Kildare" set one day when I was tapped on the shoulder by George Pal, Producer/Director known best for "The Time Machine" and "War Of The Worlds". He noticed that I walked like a "duck", with my feet turned out, as many dancers do. He asked if I was a dancer and said that he had thought so because he was walking behind me and noticed that I walked with my feet turned out. I started to laugh as I answered, "Yes", and told him that I had been walking like a duck since I started dance at the age of 4, and that it had long been a joke among my friends. He wanted me in the MGM Casting Office at 10:00 AM the next morning in dance clothes, prepared to dance. The office was full of furniture and men. I managed to find some space to spin but mostly was leaping over furniture and laps. I ended up walking out with a lovely part in MGM/Cinerama's, "Wonderful World Of The Brothers' Grimm", the story of the 2 brothers who wrote "Grimm's Fairy Tales". I was the Ballerina in one of the 3 stories, "The Cobbler And The Elves". My scenes were with Lawrence Harvey who played one of the brothers and was aged to look like the little old cobbler. Working with Geoge, Larry and Hermes Pann, Fred Astaire's choreographer, was an actress/dancer's dream, especially for a first film. The film was loaded with star actors who all went on tour to various cities for a month pemiering the film . Somehow I was included in this group. I toured 17 cities in 21 days and when I got back, Barbara Eden was ill and I went out a second time taking the tour she was scheduled for. This tour included fewer cities and a longer time in each. George Pal and his wife took this same premiering tour as well. This time I received the Glass Key to the City of Toledo, Ohio, the "Glass Capitol Of The World", was given a presentation by Senator Hubert H. Humphrey and escorted to the Ball by the Senator's son given in our honor. We were guests of the Governor of Georgia in Atlanta and at 19 years old I was asked on the spur of the moment to address the entire Georgia State Legislature, I was quite at ease and had a ball as I had already sat next to Senator Humphey at the Premiere in Minneapolis where it was the first time I had seen the film. The Senator whispered, "What does it feel like to see your name on the big screen for the first time?" I answered back in all seriousness, "Probably like you felt winning your first election.". He roared with laughter and I spent the evening more with him and his wife than with his son. As I was not yet 21, the studio had to send someone with me. I suggested my Mother, as traveling with a stranger in my suite did not sound too inviting. The Finacial People were thrilled as I explained to them that they would only pay for my Mother's fare and accomodations, while anyone else would also include a salary and my Mother would not. My Mother was young, beautiful and loaded with class and charm, so everyone was delighted. Also, right after I graduated Uni, I started volunteering in Pediatrics at UCLA Medical Center. lled by parents of families I had become comlpletely part of, that their child was back in the hospital again. I went regardless of my work schedule, sometimes at 10:30 at night after work or a dance class or my dates would take me by on the way. I was hired as a member of the staff by a Pediatric Opthamologist while his secretary/assistant was on 3 month maternity leave. She never came back. He only worked 3 half days a week in his office and did so around my work schedule. When I was on my first 2 tours he hired a Temp. but when I had to leave on my 3rd tour after I did Barbara's, I had to give notice. Each time I came back though, I went straight to the hospital from the airport to see "my kids". They were all terminal and I had to know that they were still alive. When I got back from Barbara's tour, George called me at home and asked me if I would give up working in the States for 3 months and open the film throughout The Orient and Australia, taking my Mother with me. I would never turn down what George considered a favor, but this was too exciting to be true. MGM arranged for people to meet us everywhere, and there was nothing that we didn't see, including tours of the foreign studios. In Japan, I was completely awed by "Kabuki" and "The Noh Dancers". We were in Hong Kong, Bangkok, Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara and Chiba City in Japan, Figi, Aukland in New Zealand and then Sydney, Melbourne and Perth in Australia including "The Outback". I appeared in newspapers in countries I hadn't even been to. All of it was very exciting. To my surprise, I began working again almost as soon as I returned to LA. Over the July 4th weekend, I was the only date taken to a single's party. The door opened and there was Richard, my future husband, sitting on a white couch staring at me with the most fabulous blue eyes I had ever seen, in a shirt that was the exact color of his eyes, completely unintentional, as Dick was color blind. Very unlike myself, never having even chosen to go steady, my first thought was, "I'm marrying that"! Little did I know that he went to a friend's home that night for dinner and announced that he met the girl he was going to marry. Dick's friend's father asked, "When? You were just here 2 nights ago!" Dick answered, "Today!" By chance we ran in to each other the next day having lunch at the same restaurant. To make a long story short, we had 3 dates, went through "The Engagement From Hell". and were married for just over 49 great years. Dick, Richard B. Wolfson, was a Negligence Attorney who specialized in Products Liability, Third Party Responsibility, Legal and Medical Malpractice and Wrongful Death Cases. He became known as a specialist in Structured Settlement Cases for families with children of different ages. Dick was 11 years older than me and we often found it amusing to realize that he was in Korea when I was in the 3rd grade on a playground in Texas wearing "I Like Ike" buttons, playing Hopscotch and jumping rope. I am now chairing our 60th Uni H I reunion, back working again, am still in our first house and have 5 pets: 3 dogs, my breed of choice, a Female Cairn Terrier, Bentli, better known as Toto dog inThe Wizard of Oz, New additions to my "Profile": My family: I have 2 daughters. Malia and Melissa. Malia and Josh live in LA and have my Grandson, Sage, who is 16 years old. Sage is a straight A student, very bright and extremely talented working toward a career in music. Melissa lives in Princeton, NJ, and has 5 kids: My "3 Men"= Ryan, 26 who just went back to school to finish his BA. Brandon, 24 who is finishing his 2nd year at Brooklyn Law School having just made "Dean's List". He wants to be a theatrical agent and Connor, who is 22, and will be graduating in May from Hofstra on Long Island. He wants to write for late night entertainment and has already performed and produced comedy shows in NY and NJ. My grand twins are already 7. Carter is interested in dinosaurs and space and wants to be an Astronaught. He is a little dickens and cute as a button. Krissy is a "Daisy" selling Girl Scout cookies again. She's not a cute kid. She's absolutely gorgeous with chiseled features, has a dancer's body and long blond hair down to her waist. Both of them are in gymnastics, and horseback riding like with all of us is their favorite. All 5 of them have their grandfather's amazing blue eyes, except for Ryan. Ryan's eyes are litterally aqua! My life has changed a lot in the last few years: At present, I'm thinking of going back to work after almost a 6 year absence but last time it was a 20 absence of raising the girl's, Girl Scout leading, dance teacher and ski trip chaperone at the girl's school, running the school fair and so on. But 20 years later I ended up not only working a lot but became a 2 term (4 years) Governor of Performers on the Board of The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. I produced many events and ongoing workshops, was entered into the 12th Edition of "The World Who's Who Of Women" and named an "International Woman Of The Year" (in The Entertainment Industry) both by the Cambridge International Biographical Society, Cambridge, England, so we'll see. My Cairn Terrier, Bentli (TOTO type dog) adores children and I'm planing to work in training with her to be a Therapy Dog for children in hospitals. Also, some months ago I had a delightful day at my next door neighbor's when they hosted a "Meet and Greet" for Adam Schiff. I found him extremely interesting and promising when I first became aware of him in the news. Actually meeting him, hearing him speak and then take an hour and 1/2 of Q and A I thought he was marvelous. Luckily I had some one on one time with him and he was just as real as he seemed, bright, efficient, affable, sincere and completely unaffeceted and down to earth.. It was not my first time with a politician as I had met many in my career so although Adam was not the first, meeting him personally insured for me for the first time since Obama left office that there is still some future for our country.
